This is a silk juban (undergarment). The fact that the inner lining is red indicates that it is a pre-World War II juban (circa before 1945). Despite its age, the condition is remarkably good. The fabric is a medium-weight silk, with a substantial and sturdy feel. The surface of the fabric is smooth, without any texture or raised areas, and has a very pleasant feel against the skin.
The red fabric of the collar has been replaced with a new material.
The base pattern (jimoyo) is the traditional Japanese geometric 'sayagata' pattern. The sayagata pattern features a continuous, repeating motif of slanted 'manji' (swastika) symbols, which represent 'fudan chokyū' or eternal prosperity and longevity (the long lasting prosperity of a family or long life).
The juban also has a charming small floral pattern, arranged to resemble clouds. The flowers depicted are chrysanthemum, plum blossom, and maple leaves. The chrysanthemum, a flower long cherished in Japan, is thought to symbolize prosperity and abundance, with its radiating petals evoking the image of the sun. The plum blossom, which endures the harsh winter to announce the arrival of spring, is also a very popular flower with the Japanese, its small, lovely flowers blooming straight upward toward the winter sky. The maple leaf, which changes color with the seasons, carries a meaning of longevity.
