These placemats are made from obi, the belts worn around the waist like a belt when wearing a kimono. All the materials are silk. Since kimonos used for special occasions ('haregi') tend to have bright colors and auspicious designs, the placemats reflect this celebratory style.

.Black Obi: This obi is characterized by its vibrant green and red embroidery that pops against a black background. The dominant pattern is a large higaki (cypress fence) design, filled with intricate geometric patterns. Interestingly, this particular bold style was fashionable 30-40 years ago, during my mother's time.

.Blue Obi: Featuring the Bishamon Kikko pattern, this obi takes its name from the design found on the armor of Bishamonten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods and a protector of warriors. The pattern represents strong defense and is a symbol of long life and good health. The obi is a stunning azure blue.

.Silver Obi: This obi showcases the kikko pattern, a geometric design comprised of hexagonal shapes that mimic the tortoise shell. As such, it is rich in symbolism, representing longevity, health, protection from evil, good luck, and stability. The silver threads provide a sophisticated shimmer and a touch of luxury. Combined with the pastel pink and blue hues, the overall impression is one of elegance and grace

.Orange Obi: This obi showcases the higaki pattern, inspired by the appearance of cypress fences constructed by diagonally weaving thin strips of cypress wood in an ajiro-like manner. The orange fabric possesses a refined luster. The fabric itself is relatively thin.

.Greenb Obi: This obi is a bright, vivid green and adorned with the kikko pattern. The fabric has a slightly puffy or textured feel because of the large amount of thread used in the embroidery.
